Environmental Project Summary

BNSF Project:
BNSF Alliance Railyard UST Removal Alliance, Nebraska

Owner/Client:
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway
500 West Kansas Street
Alliance, Nebraska 69301
Jim Cunningham
(612) 782-3483

Type of Waste / Contaminant:
Diesel Fuel, Waste Oil

Scope of Work:
Removal of six underground storage tanks of the following sizes: 2,000 gallon (diesel), 10,000 gallon (waste oil), 34,000 gallon (diesel), two 20,000 gallon (diesel), and a 30,000 gallon (diesel). Construction activities included concrete removal, tank excavation, soils testing, hauling of contaminated soils to a disposal site, and backfill of excavations with native or clean new fill. Product lines were removed where possible, and where it was not possible product lines were drained, capped, and left in place. This project presented several challenges typical of construction in a railyard since the tanks were located near the tracks and trains continued to roll. In addition, the site was underlain by sand, making excavation tedious. The entire project, including disposal of contaminated soils was completed for less than $75,000.
