FEATURED PROJECT...
Virtual LAN Service to Novartis
Lincoln, NE - Working for Windstream Communications, General Excavating recently completed work on a fiber optic construction project to serve Novartis. The VLS (Virtual LAN Service) project combines the voice, data, and internet service provided to Novartis and will improve the speed and reliability of their communications. Working along Highway 6, a three-man vibratory plow crew and two 2-man bore crews completed the nearly 18,000-feet fiber optic project approximately one week earlier than expected. Evert Whitten, project manager at General Excavating, explained some of the difficulties of the job. "We knew there were a lot of existing utilities such as water, sewer, telephone, and power in the way but to cross 216 accurately located utilities without a cut is really a complement to our guys in the field. The weather didn't do us any favors as work in the road ditch was made more difficult due to heavy rains and standing water." Trenchless construction plays an important part in the installation of new communication infrastructure and this project was no different. Roadways and utilities were horizontally bored and vacuum excavation was used to expose and properly locate the buried utilities. The use of trenchless construction minimized the disruption to businesses located along Cornhusker Highway as nineteen roadways were bored. Boring also reduced the amount of site restoration. Associated work on this project included the placement of hand holes, setting pedestals, and grading the disturbed areas.

Joe Giesler Joins The General Excavating Team
We are pleased to announce the addition of Joe Giesler to the project management staff at General Excavating. Joe's extensive experience in site utilities, communications, and environmental construction allows General Excavating to take their level of service to a higher level. With the last 10 plus years running work in Omaha, Joe possesses over 25 years of field and project management experience giving him the needed perspective to manage projects effectively. Joe's certifications and training includes OSHA EXCAVATION and COMPETENT PERSON, FIRST AID and CPR as well as 40-HOUR OSHA HAZWOPER. Assisting in the installation of underground utilities, building of fiber networks, or the clean-up of hazard materials, Joe's work background is the perfect fit for the services already offered by General Excavating. Joe was asked to share some thoughts about the new opportunities presented at General Excavating and what he has to offer clients.
Q. What did you see at General Excavating that made this feel like a good fit for your skills?
A. The level of service offered by GE is really unique for the industry. I have worked in the construction field for a long time at a few different places and just really feel like this company does it the "right" way. It starts upfront by giving clients an honest assessment of what it will take to build the project. If problems come up, they are addressed. No finger-pointing which seems common in the industry.
Q. What past project experience do you have and how will it help in your new role?
A. I spent a good deal of time managing work at the MUD Platte West Water Treatment Plant, worked on communications upgrades for various providers, and handled miscellaneous service work for a variety of clients in Omaha and the surrounding area. I am excited because General Excavating has a reputation for tackling some of the jobs others will shy away from. I have only been here a short time and I have already heard phrases like... "has to be done yesterday", "it's deep and nasty", "no room", "have to work around others", and some other choice terms that might not need to be repeated.
Q. How about down time, what do you do when you're not at work?
A. I have been married for 16 years and have a young son and daughter that keep me busy. I love to hunt, fish, and spend time outdoors.
Joe can be reached at jgiesler@generalexcavating.com or by cell phone at (402) 430-9028 and can help provide budget numbers, answer construction questions, or work up numbers on your next underground utility project.

A Teachable Moment
While working on the campus of a State of Nebraska facility an opportunity presented itself. Yancey Keiser and Marhlon Brown, both project foremen at General Excavating, took some time out of their morning to discuss the work occurring on campus and the equipment needed to complete the project. The students had a chance to see and ask questions about what is required to make the computers run when they hit the power switch as General Excavating was on site to upgrade the communications infrastructure for the school.
