Communications Construction enhances existing division at General Excavating!

As of August 1, 2000, General Excavating acquired Communications Construction, Inc. (CCI). To stay in tune with the ongoing evolution of the communications industry, CCI was acquired to provide turn-key long-haul communications systems construction.

CCI, based out of Hamburg, Iowa, provides services in fiber-optic and copper cable installation, fiber-optic splicing, long-haul plowing and REA construction. CCI was added to General Excavating to enhance their existing communications division. Prior to the acquisition, General Excavating typically performed work in telecommunications maintenance and outside plant construction. With the acquisition, General Excavating can now provide a full range of communication services to their clients.

According to Vice-President Joe D'Amico, "We are always looking to invest in new companies, equipment, training and operational improvements. This acquisition helps us become a regional leader in today's communications construction industry."

All 50 employees with CCI have been brought onto the General Excavating team; bringing the total number of GE employees to 160.

Lancaster County Event Center Feature Project

A High-Profile Community Project

Located on the outskirts of town, the Lancaster County Event Center is beginning to take shape. With three immense buildings (with another future) and ample parking, the new multi-use facility is planned to house the county fair next fall and other agricultural-type shows including horse and dog shows. It is also planned to draw other large functions such as monster truck rallies and car shows...something Lincoln has wanted for a long time.

The Lancaster County Agricultural Society contracted Judds Bros. Construction to assume the role as General Contractor to construct this high-profile community project. Shanahan Mechanical and Electrical, Inc., a subcontractor to Judds, hired General Excavating to complete a portion of the site utilities.

The section of the project that General Excavating was accountable for included installation of reinforced concrete storm sewer pipe including roof drain piping, ten manholes and two inlets. Another large assignment included installation of two sanitary sewer ejector pits with sewer service lines coming from the pits to tie onto the City of Lincoln sewer main. According to Jim Brunner, Project Manager for General Excavating, "Our portion of the project was very important to the overall picture. If drainage pipe and structures are not properly constructed, the long term effects could be very serious". Skillful planning and a professional field team led by Daryl Hopp, Project Foreman, resulted in a complete and proficient project.

The engineer and architect for the event center was Design Associates of Lincoln, Inc.

An 8-Second Ride? ABC Construction and Equipment Rodeo

In sunshine or in rain, General Excavating is proud to have Nebraska's top equipment operators!

It hadn't rained for over 30 days, but it was a torrential down pour the morning and afternoon of the ABC Construction and Equipment Rodeo. That didn't dampen the results for GE though: Allen Kaster took first place in his event.

The Construction and Equipment Rodeo held competitions in four events: backhoes, skidloaders, mini-excavators, and excavators. Mr. Kaster placed first in the backhoe competition. Paul Semmen, another operator for General Excavating, placed fifth in the mini-excavator competition.

Each event had over 35 contestants competing against the clock. Skidloaders were required to run an obstacle course, while the excavators and backhoes were required to perform tedious placement tasks with the hoe. General Excavating's four-man team placed first in the Mini-Excavator Team Competition.
