FEATURE PROJECT: Time Warner Cable Fiber Run

Recently, General Excavating placed 150 miles of fiber cable to three rural areas in eastern Nebraska. These feeds allow rural areas to have High-Speed Internet connection and Digital Cable Television.

Two of General Excavating's offices aided in the construction of this 150-mile fiber run. The Lincoln, Nebraska office, as well as the Hamburg, Iowa office had crews across eastern Nebraska working for several months on this install. "General Excavating's crews were able to complete these projects in a timely fashion and handled our aggressive schedule very well. They did a good job and were reliable", commented Marlys Remus, Time Warner Cable.

Not only were typical installation methods used to plow the fiber and to dig the hand holes, General Excavating was able to utilize their trenchless technology methods. Directional Bore machines were used to drill under all roadway intersections, creeks and rivers. Once the fiber was installed, General Excavating restored the right-of-ways by grading and compacting, as well as re-seeding all disturbed areas. General Excavating obtained all proper county and state permits prior to construction.

Lynn Siedschlag, Division Manager for General Excavating's Communications Department says, "It's good working with local clients such as Time Warner Cable. We have developed a good relationship with them through fair pricing and hard work."

Feature Method: Directional Boring, A Trenchless Technology

Directional Boring has been used to install water main, electrical, gas, and cable for many years now. The latest utility to utilize boring methods is fiber optics. The marriage of trenchless technology to the installation of fiber-optic cable was inevitable. This marriage has been a good one for General Excavating.

Telecommunications companies such as Alltel, Worldcom, McLeod USA, Sprint, Level 3 and AT&T have contracted General Excavating to install new fiber-optic cable and to maintain their existing lines.

Why are major communications companies using the trenchless method? It's simple. As with water, gas, cable and electrical, the trenchless method eliminates the need for road shutdowns and saves time and expense on street restoration work. It eliminates possible damage caused by crossing existing utilities, and reduces the need for open pits and large trenches. Safety is always the number one consideration at General Excavating our trenchless technology aids in a very safe worksite. With the use of vacuum excavation prior to directional boring, existing underground utility locations are verified preceding any type of construction. This also saves time and money by eliminating utility interruption.
