Bruno, NE - Working for the Union Pacific Railroad, General Excavating recently completed work on a groundwater remediation system on the property of the Bruno Cooperative Association. Conestoga-Rovers and Associates is the engineering firm responsible for the remedial design and remedial action (RD/RA) at the site.
The contamination was first discovered in 1986 and assessed in 1987. The site, originally owned by the Chicago and North Western Railway Company, was leased to the USDA for federal grain storage in the late 1940's to 1960's. Local farmers purchased many of the bins in 1964.
The Bruno Co-op purchased one remaining bin in 1988 along with another company, Wagner Mills, which was also located at the site. Contaminants had been poured into the grain as fumigants and also placed on the surface for rodent control. The chemicals eventually migrated into the city wells and contaminated the drinking source. New wells were drilled to serve the residents and the contaminated plume will be treated by the construction of the remediation system.
The remediation system installed by General Excavating included tying into four extraction wells that had been previously drilled. The contaminated water would be pumped through force mains to a tray type air stripper. The stripper would remove and transfer the contaminants to the air by allowing the water to pass over a series of aeration trays.
The treated water then gravity flows for discharge into a tributary of Skull Creek at the site. General Excavating also constructed manholes, treatment building, air stripper and all other associated work. The treatment system will remain in operation for a number of years with continual monitoring of the extraction wells, off-gases, and discharge water.
