Fiber Optic Cable Route, Gretna - Hwy 6/31 Relocation

A General Excavating crew plows HDPE duct.

A vibrating plow installs conduit. Marker tape is placed for future locates.

Gretna, NE Working for Verizon, General Excavating recently completed work on nearly four miles of fiber relocation as the Nebraska Department of Roads widens a section of Highway 6 in Sarpy and Douglas Counties from two to four lanes. Construction on this heavily traveled road required a considerable amount of coordination as crews moved the fiber route across Highway 6 at several locations, exposed existing utilities, set hand holes, and dug bore pits. Roads, streams, and railroad tracks were crossed using directional boring. "One challenging railroad crossing required a bore over 60-foot deep," commented Dennis Willeford, foreman for General Excavating.

Starting in June, the route was staked as construction took place in the public right of way. A vibratory plow was used to install approximately 18,000' of the 2-inch HDPE duct while horizontal directional drilling was utilized to construct almost 3,500' of conduit. Installation on a fiber project includes burying the conduit, blowing a string through, pulling the fiber, and then splicing the fiber. On July 14th, the hot cut was completed, connecting the new fiber to existing fiber. The fiber from the old route was pulled and put on reels for reuse on other Verizon projects. The construction of hand holes, splice pits, concrete replacement, and site restoration were other important components of the project. "I was pleased, the guys ran a safe job on a busy road and kept construction moving along," stated John Kooistra, project manager for General Excavating.

Windstream Communications

Windstream

Outside plant construction for Windstream Communications has kept General Excavating crews busy this spring and summer. The bulk of the work continues to be installation of new communication facilities in residential subdivisions. General Excavating buries the copper cable and sets the pedestals as a point of connection to the new houses. In the Hartland's Garden Valley subdivision, General Excavating is installing fiber in place of copper. Fiber provides greater flexibility for providing a variety of communication and entertainment products. Other services provided by General Excavating as part of the Construction and Maintenance Contract include:

  • Relocating existing communications infrastructure on street and road widening projects.
  • Excavating and backfilling on interrupted service calls.
  • HDPE duct installation, cable splicing, and repair or replacement of manholes.
  • Communication upgrade projects including fiber and copper cable placement.

Work In A Tight Spot

Guard Shacks, Additional Safety Procedures, I.D. Badges, Limited Staging Area, Confined Spaces… all familiar terms and guidelines when working on industrial or manufacturing projects. General Excavating has always thrived in these types of work environments. Cargill Meat Solutions, Kawasaki, Pfizer, Novartis, Goodyear, and Harker Foods have all been sites where General Excavating has found itself between a concrete wall and some other immovable object. "One of the challenges on this type of project is the large number of people all working in the same small area. Coordination with the other trades is crucial for a successful project," stated Jim Brunner, project manager for General Excavating. While work in a manufacturing facility can provide some unique problems it also represents an opportunity to showcase the construction skills and safety procedures a company utilizes on a day-to-day basis. Are you installing a fireline, improving the storm sewer system, constructing a new sanitary sewer line, or installing floor drains? If so, before you start your next project and find yourself between a load bearing wall and another large object, let General Excavating be Your "Underground" Partner.

PHOTO OF THE QUARTER

Photo of the Quarter
An opportunity for General Excavating's employees to show others the work they perform. Winners receive cash and have their photo displayed at General Excavating.

Lee Lancaster submitted this quarter's winning photograph. A foreman in the utilities division, Lee has worked at General Excavating for sixteen years. Lee completes a wide range of water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer projects for private and public owners.

General Excavating, working for the City of Valley, constructed over 7,200 feet of 8-inch sanitary sewer force main on the project designed by Olmsted & Perry. The photograph illustrates some of the many safety precautions used to keep the crew and others safe. Open excavations are fenced off and clearly marked when workers move to another portion of the job site.
