Warning signs marked the "HOT ZONES" which required TYVEK suits.

General Excavating began work in October of 1999 on phase one of a remediation project for Nucor Bar Mill Group in Norfolk, Nebraska. The final stages of the project were completed in December of 2003. The goal of the project was to clean up lead and cadmium impacted soil and construct a synthetic capping system.

"The installation of the synthetic capping system, is designed to prevent the migration of metals to the water table and provide a barrier between the airborne soil particles and the steel mill workers." explains Craig Osborn, Project Manager, for HDR Engineering, Inc. The synthetic capping and drainage system constructed for Nucor by General Excavating represented a divergence in the typical design associated with the kind of contamination present at Nucor Bar-Mill. Usually, the type of clean up found at Nucor calls for excavating the material and hauling it to a hazardous waste site. The capping system utilized in this project is typically associated with landfill remediation projects.

The critical safety elements required on this project coupled with completing the work at an operating steel mill required a high level of diligence by General Excavating. HAZMAT safety, coordination with Nucor plant personnel, and an exacting attention to tight project specifications were essential for this project to succeed. According to Tomas Miller, Environmental Manager for Nucor Bar-Mill,"General Excavating had to overcome some significant challenges completing the job at an operating steel mill...GE met the deadline and did so while maintaining high quality standards for their work. The finished product met all of our expectations and saved us considerable money over other project alternatives."
