ABC Awards Banquet Honors General Excavating
General Excavating was presented an "Excellence in Construction" Award for an environmental project that required immediate attention. A catastrophic release of petroleum from an underground storage tank system entered an underground pedestrian walkway connecting the Bryan LGH-East parking lot with the building's physical therapy center. Petroleum began seeping into the soils surrounding the tunnel and coming up through the cracks, while omitting vapors that created an unsafe environment.
A construction award was given to General Excavating because they provided a safe and quick method for removing the contaminated soils and installed a proper venting system. All construction was completed within a confined hallway area of 10-feet by 100-feet.

General Excavating's winning project consisted of placing four 2-inch conduits and 40 new manholes in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. McLeod USA requested a loop be placed in this area to provide communications duct to be used by local businesses. Construction required the use of General Excavating's trenchless technology. Existing utilities were located by using a vacuum excavator, lowering costs and reducing safety concerns. Due to high vehicle and pedestrian traffic in downtown Omaha, directional boring was used to place the duct.

General Excavating Employee Wins First Place at Construction Rodeo
Allen Kaster, an equipment operator for General Excavating, won first place at the Associated Builders and Contractors Annual Construction and Equipment Rodeo. Competitions were held in four events: backhoes, skidloaders, mini-excavators, and excavators. Mr. Kaster placed first in the backhoe competition. Paul Semmen, another operator for General Excavating, placed fifth in the mini-excavator competition.
Each event had over 35 contestants competing against the clock. Skidloaders were required to run an obstacle course, while the excavators and backhoes were required to perform tedious placement tasks with the hoe. One of General Excavating's two four-man teams placed first in the Mini-Excavator Team Competition. Team members included Terry Clifton, James Puls, Paul Semmen and Allen Kaster.

General Excavating 2nd Place at International Competition
General Excavating's boring team finished 2nd place at the International Directional Drilling Rodeo. Twenty-eight teams from three different countries competed in this competition set in Perry, Georgia. Teams were required to runa 200-foot directional drill and pull back 4-inches of continuous conduit. They were required to hit a 6-inch target and then attach to a 4" conduit and install the conduit in the ground. The vacuum excavator was then used to verify depth and line at three different checkpoints. The General Excavating team finished only three inches off target.
Teams were judged on speed, accuracy, depth and line. For two days, the General Excavating team was in first place until the final round. For runner-up, General Excavating received over $20,000 in cash, prizes and supplies.
Directional boring is a trenchless technology that has tremendous advantages compared to open trench methods. With small hole techniques, the work is done from above ground through a small opening. This process minimizes restoration and easily triples productivity compared with conventional open pit repair and backfill methods. The vacuum excavation system also plays an important role in directional boring by enabling operators to know the exact location of utilities intersecting the bore path and to remove slurry from the boring site.
Team members were James Oldfied - Foreman, Steve Crosby, Yancey Keiser and Derek Kreifel.
