Work Description:
This project was part of a much larger scope of work to improve site utilities and field lighting at Memorial Stadium. General Excavating repaired and upgraded the existing sanitary sewer piping to serve the east side of Memorial Stadium, and portions of the sewer serving the west side of the stadium, including the weight training facility. The project was originally specified for sewer repair and replacement using traditional open-trench installation. In response to UNL's concern for the integrity of the stadium structure, General Excavating proposed directional boring of the new line, to eliminate the need to cut into the existing structure.
Method of Construction:
General Excavating used cameras to photo-verify the location of existing lines, their condition and connections. A bore pit was then excavated with a track-backhoe on the outside of the west stadium. A steel shoring box was inserted into the excavation for support. A 150-foot long, 16-inch bore was executed and a 16 inch casing was inserted. A 10-inch carrier pipe was nested in sand backfill. After the bore was executed and manholes were set, three separate pours of low-grade concrete were used to support the outside of the west stadium foundation. Steel shoring was left in place and the hole was backfilled. The line to the weight training facility was hand-excavated, with great care taken to isolate the weight room and equipment from the construction activities and dust.
Benefit to Client:
Training activities continued throughout construction with little disruption and inconvenience to UNL trainers, athletes, and football camps for junior high and high school students. Use of Directional Boring construction resulted in a $40,000 savings to the customer. Boring also reduced structural concerns that open trench construction may have produced. The project was completed in time for the 1997 football season opener.
Conclusion:
The project was completed on-time, under budget, and without accidents or safety problems.
